District disabled rehabilitation centres open

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The State Government has set up district disabled rehabilitation centres (DDRCs) in four districts — Mysore, Gadag, Haveri and Raichur — on a pilot basis with the support of the Red Cross.

Minister for Women and Child Development C.C. Patil told presspersons here on Wednesday that these centres are fully funded by the State government and Rs. 30 lakh would be given to each centre annually to take care of children with disabilities in four districts.

DDRCs are being set up to provide comprehensive rehabilitation service to persons with disabilities (PWDs) to enable them to become self-sufficient and productive.

Mr, Patil said the department has introduced a special health scheme for infants from BPL families — Bala Sanjeevini — to bring down infant mortality. Five nodal hospitals would provide facilities for beneficiaries of the scheme in the first phase.
