HYDERABAD: The Cabinet Sub-Committee on National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has mooted a special legislation to check irregularities in implementation of the scheme. It was resolved in the recent Cabinet meeting to tighten the implementation of the employment generation scheme without scope for irregularities by bringing in a legislation if required. The Cabinet Sub-Committee on NREGS was asked to study the proposal in depth and give its views. All the Cabinet Sub-Committee members -- Rural Development Minister Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad, Revenue Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, Transport Minister and PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana, Woman and Child Welfare Minister Sunitha Laxma Reddy, Tourism Minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar, Civil Supplies Minister D. Sridhar Babu, and School Education Minister S. Sailajanath, were present in the review meeting held here on Wednesday. It was also suggested in the meeting that special courts be created for fast trial of those involved in the misuse of NREGS funds brought to light under the social audit. Another issue that came up for discussion was strengthening the set-up of field assistants who staged protests recently to focus their demands and the government agreed to pay them minimum wages. In this context, the sub-committee also wanted to fix the criteria for recruitment of new field assistants. The Cabinet Sub-Committee would meet again on June 28 to finetune its decisions.
