Rutuja Bhosale beats Haas, enters quarterfinals

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Rutuja Bhosale made the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory over Patricia Haas of Austria in the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday.

In a battle that lasted nearly two hours, Rutuja tamed the talented left-hander from Austria.

Rutuja was up 4-2 in both the sets, but had to grapple with her opponent's aggressive strokes, as much as her own inconsistency, before emerging triumphant in a one-sided tie-break. Rutuja will be up against Prerna Bhambri, who beat Shin Jung Yoon of Korea.

Ratnika Batra stayed on course for the tougher challenges ahead as she worked her way past wild-card Nidhi Chilumula.

Nidhi was quite good with her all-round game, but lacked the experience to tackle a player of the calibre of Ratnika, who has already won both the National women's title and National Games title in her fledgling career.

Ratnika will meet the fifth-seeded Stephanie Scimone of Italy, who breezed past Nehel Sahni for the loss of one game.

Indifferent start

Top seed Keren Shlomo of Israel bounced back from an indifferent start to beat qualifier Kim Ju Eun of Korea in three sets, and will meet Yang Zhaoxuan of China, in the quarterfinals.

The results:

P re-quarterfinals: Keren Shlomo (Isr) bt Kim Ju Eun (Kor) 0-6, 6-4, 6-2; Yang Zhaoxuan (Chn) bt Garima Vatwani 6-2, 6-0; Ratnika Batra bt Nidhi Chilumula 6-3, 6-3; Stephanie Scimone (Ita) bt Nehel Sahni 6-1, 6-0; Kim Hae Sung (Kor) bt Joanna Nalborska (Pol) 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3; Desiree Bastianon (Bel) bt Rishika Sunkara 6-4, 5-7, 6-0; Prerna Bhambri bt Shin Jung Yoon (Kor) 6-3, 6-4; Rutuja Bhosale bt Patricia Haas (Aut) 6-4, 7-6(2).
