CHAMPION OUTFIT: Triplicane Cosmopolitan Club, which lifted the Dr. P. Subbarayan Shield. CHENNAI: Triplicane Cosmopolitan Club (TCC) won TNCA's fifth division championship for the Dr. P. Subbarayan Shield after registering wins over Egmore Club and Mylapore Recreation Club ‘A' in the play-offs here recently. Earlier, the fifth division zone ‘A' championship (for the P. Ananda Rau Shield) was won by Komaleeswarar CC while the ‘B' division championship (for the V.P. Raghavan Shield) was clinched by Triplicane Cosmopolitan. Egmore Club won the ‘C' division (for the M.V. Kasturi Rangan Shield) while Mylapore RC ‘A' took the S. Annadurai Shield in the ‘D' zone. The respective zonal winners then competed in the play-offs, in which Triplicane Cosmopolitan beat Egmore Club by 34 runs and Mylapore RC ‘A' by 45 runs. Star performers V. Ashok Kumar (341 runs at 34.10) and P. Muralidharan (49 wickets at 8.57) were the star performers for the champion team this season. The four teams which contested the play-offs were promoted to the fourth division. United Friends, Singaravelar MC, Indian Air Force (Tbm) and Indian Oil Club were relegated to the sixth division. Sushane and Naveen bat well for St. John's R. Sushane Kumar (86) and N. Naveen (79) helped St. John's MHSS beat Sapthagiri Vidyalaya (Poompuhar) by 118 runs in the Bhooma Teacher Memorial Trophy (under-15) tournament being conducted at Agarsen College grounds here. The scores: St. John's MHSS 199 for one in 25 overs (R. Sushane Kumar 86, N. Naveen 79) bt Sapthagiri Vidyalaya (Poompuhar) 81 in 20 overs (M. Kishane Kumar three for 11). Sindhi Model HSS 132 in 26 overs (Hari 37, Raghunandan 31, Sabarikanth three for 31, Aravinda three for five) lost to Velammal MHSS (Surapet) 133 for seven in 17.2 overs (Aditya 28 n.o., Sharat 44 n.o.). Palani BBC reigns Palani BBC (Palani), with 10 points, retained the CPCL Trophy State-level men's ball badminton tournament held here during the weekend. Palani defeated NRBC (Coimbatore) and Thiruvottiyur BBC, but lost to Roots (Chennai) in the four-team league. Roots (6) finished second and TBBC (4) third. G. Aravindhan, DGM, CPCL, gave away the prizes. Narayanan-Anandan duo wins R. S. Narayanan and C. Anandan won with a score of 61.24 IMPs, playing North-South while N. Periasamy and V. Ramkumar from East-West direction with a score of 58.42 IMPs in the CBA weekly bridge tournament. Other positions: North-South: 2. Arunkumar and S. Ganapathy; 3. T.M. Suri and R. Krishnaswamy; East-West: 2. Vinothkumar and Guthi Rajasekar; 3. Viji and R.A. Srinivasan . Throwball trials The trials to select the Tamil Nadu teams for the junior National throwball championship will be conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, at 8 a.m. on July 3.
