VIJAYAWADA: She is just six years old and is already the under-7 Andhra Pradesh champion. This toddler will represent Andhra Pradesh in the national championship to be held at Pune. Meet J. Mahalakshmi, the young chess sensation from Krishna district. First title In the recently concluded AP State championship at Bhimavaram, Mahalakshmi topped the table by garnering four points to win her first major title. “Mahalakshmi is a natural chess player as she has the quintessential quality of playing for longer hours without distraction. She has both the attitude and aptitude for the game. She will certainly make waves in the game of sixty-four squares in the days to come,” said her mentor V.R. Bobba, who is instrumental for producing many national and international players from the district. Mr. Bobba said Mahalakshmi joined the last year summer camp at the Mustabada Sports and Educational Academy at Mustabada to spend some quality time during holidays. “Very soon I could identify the spark in her,” he added. “She is fearless and plays her moves without hesitation. She will be representing AP in the Pune National from July 16 to 25,” Mr. Bobba added. The parents of the little champion are in the legal profession, with the mother working as district judge at Kovvur and father is a senior lawyer. Mustabada Sports and Educational Academy director B. Ratna Rao, Krishna District Chess Association secretary D. Srihari, and District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar congratulated Mahalakshmi on her feat.
