U.P. Dalit rape victim admitted to AIIMS

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: The minor Dalit girl from Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh who was beaten up by two teenagers and stabbed in the eyes when she resisted their rape attempts has been brought and admitted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here.

The girl was brought to the Capital on Wednesday with injuries to her eyes, face (nasal fracture), chest and arms. She was examined by doctors at the Dr. R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences Centre and is under observation. The doctors said delay in providing treatment had caused the eyes' condition to worsen.

“The girl sustained injuries in the attack and there was a delay of 24 hours before she was taken to a hospital in UP. She was repeatedly stabbed in her eyes and beaten with sticks when she resisted the rape attempt. The attack has left her with no vision in the left eye and blurred vision in the right. After examining her we found that the cornea of her left eye is completely damaged and though the vision in the right eye is better, we still have to see how much damage has been done. At present her right eyelid is swollen. The doctors have cleaned both the eyes and are checking for any infection that may have set in,” said a senior doctor at the centre.
