‘Yeddyurappa taking advantage of his caste'

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: Basavanagouda Patil Yatnal, general secretary of the State unit of the Janata Dal (S), has accused Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa of taking advantage of his caste to stay in power.

He told presspersons here on Wednesday that Mr. Yeddyurappa was banking on the Lingayat community to retain his seat. When a change of leadership was proposed, a huge Lingayat convention was organised to save his chair.

Taking exception to the support extended by some heads of Veerashaiva religious institutions to the Chief Minister, he said this did not bode well for the community.

He said Veerashaiva religious heads were revered by members of various communities and it was their duty to advise against wrong doings.

Announcing that cutting across party lines, an all-India convention of Veerashaivas will be organised in three months, the former Union Minister said the convention would be used as a platform to prove that Mr. Yeddyurappa did not enjoy the support of the entire Lingayat community.

Shakeel Nawaz, president of the party's minority cell, Annadani, head of the SC/ST wing, and Madhu Bangarappa were present.
