Road works in full swing for the purpose It will ensure free flow of traffic in Namakkal Namakkal: Collector J. Kumaragurubaran said that a host of changes would be made in the traffic pattern in the city limit to avert congestion on roads and ensure free flow of traffic. At the Road Safety Meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday, the Collector said road works were being carried out in full swing near the bus stand and other important roads in the city for this purpose. Reading out the changes in the traffic pattern, he said that it was prepared after consulting the revenue, administration and police officials and representatives of various associations. “Soon after completion of the road works, the ‘in gate' of the bus stand would be made the ‘out gate' and vice-versa”, he said. Buses from Tiruchi would have to take the left turn near the bus stand and go via Paramathi road to reach the Salem road junction after going around the Fort to reach the bus stand. Taxis parked by the side of the road near the Travellers' Bungalow would be given an alternative place to avoid congestion, Mr. Kumaragurubaran said and added that a similar arrangement would be made for the unorganised parking lots in the city limit that had been causing inconvenience to the road users. Realising the significance of the freight transport industry here, he said that trucks and heavy freight carriers would be permitted to enter the city area for 12 hours – from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., while they should stay out of the city for the other half of the day, he said. According to him, trucks carrying goods to the commercials establishments will have a relaxation of two hours in the afternoon – from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. – in addition to the above said 12 hours. Owing to maintenance works being carried out on Pudupatti-Vallipuram road, trucks carrying sand could enter the city from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. till the work is completed. He advised autorickshaw drivers in the city to limit their passenger strength – especially school students – to the permitted capacity. Superintendent of Police Pravesh Kumar, District Revenue Officer R. Seethalakshmi, representatives of the lorry, private bus, taxi, autorickshaw and business associations participated.
