COIMBATORE: Export registration of cotton yarn during April-May this year was slightly higher compared to the same period last year. According to an official of the Southern India Mills' Association, 71 million kg of yarn was registered for exports in April this year and 63 million kg in May. This was against about 55 million kg a month during the same period last year. The stock levels are beginning to deplete for exporters and the market will improve soon. However, with massive increase in spinning capacity, the mills will be able to operate to full capacity only when the exports reach about 100 million kg. On the domestic front, the monthly yarn consumption used to be about 240 million kg in the country. It has declined to 185 million kg. The stock level is also high with the mills. It is expected to take three to four months for the domestic market to stabilise, the official said.
