KATTAPPANA: A team of revenue officials led by Udumbanchola tahsildar V.R. Mohanan Pillai on Thursday conducted a massive eviction drive in Sinkukandam area of Chinnakkanal village where illegal constructions had come up even after an earlier eviction drive. About 365 hectares of land of the State-owned Hindustan Newsprint Ltd. (HNL) has been found encroached upon. The team demolished constructions, including temporary sheds and a pig farm, and cultivations and acquired the land to the State land bank. The encroachers had cut down eucalyptus trees and constructed sheds in survey numbers 209 14/1 and 34/1 of the HNL property. The team also demolished illegal constructions in Pothamedu in Bison Valley village. A pig farm constructed illegally in the catchment area of Anayirangal dam was also demolished. Case will be taken against the encroachers under Land Conservancy Act, 1957. The Revenue Department had been keeping a tag on encroachments and illegal constructions. Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan who had visited the place last week had realised the level of encroachments in Chinnakkanal and near Anayirangal dam and had promised stern steps against all kinds of encroachments in Udumbanchola and Devikulam taluks. The eviction drive continued till late in the evening. Mr. Mohanan Pillai told The Hindu that many sheds had come up in the areas where an eviction was conducted earlier. In some areas, the encroachers had cultivated crops, like tapioca and cardamom, which the revenue team destroyed with the help of police.
