Steps to be taken to construct mud dam: Chairman Water from Kuzuthurai river to quench thirst of Nagercoil Nagercoil: The councillors of Nagercoil Municipal Council urged Chairman Asokan Solomon to take immediate steps to construct a dam across Ulakkaiaruvi to solve the water scarcity in the town. A resolution to this effect was unanimously passed at the council meeting which held here on Wednesday. When the council meeting started, the councillors asked what steps were taken by the authorities to remove encroachments. They alleged that the project was put in the cold storage. Replying to the councillors, the Chairman pointed out that as the contractors failed to implement the road works within the stipulated period, notices had already been issued to them to complete the works at the earliest. If they did not complete the work, the tender would be cancelled and they would be notified under blacklisted contractors. In connection with the encroachment (erection of political hoardings), he said that a meeting would be conducted with the representatives of all political parties at the earliest to remove all the hoardings to ensure the smooth flow of traffic with in the town limit. The Chairman pointed out that a sum of Rs. 89 crore was needed to construct a dam at Ulakkaiaruvi and hence the scheme was abandoned. However, steps would be taken to construct a mud dam similar to Mukkadal and Poigai dams. With the construction of mud dam ‘we could renovate the Ulakkaiaruvi scheme' at cheaper cost, said the chairman. It has also been decided to bring water from Kuzuthurai river to Nagercoil to quench the thirst of residents of Nagercoil town. The municipality has decided to give Rs.2 lakh to prepare feasibility study to TWAD board. A resolution to this effect was also unanimously passed at the council meeting. In the meantime the councillors belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazagham staged a walkout demanding the municipal authorities to complete the maintenance work at Anna bus stand as school and office goers were put to untold hardship.
