Dharna in Udupi against increase in fuel prices

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: The Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) took out a rally against the rise in prices of petroleum products here on Thursday.

The rally, which began from the KSRTC Bus Stand, culminated in front of the taluk office, where the protesters staged a dharna. Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district unit general secretary P. Vishawanath Rai said the Centre had increased the price of petrol by Rs. 5 on May 15 on the pretext that there had been an increase in the global crude oil prices. If governments reduced the tax and duty on petroleum products by 50 per cent, there would be a drop in their prices. JCTU leaders Sripati Acharya, Ramesh Mendon, U. Shivaraya and Shekhar, were present.
