In 2010, the number of cases was 10,781 484 cases in Thrissur Thrissur: The attack on a woman IT professional in Kochi on Tuesday is the latest indication of the growing number of crimes against women in the State, which boasts the highest literacy rate. According to the official statistics available with the Kerala Police, if the total number of crimes against women reported in 2010 was 10,781, the current year witnessed 4,318 cases in the first four months itself. Ironically, Thrissur, the cultural capital, tops the chart in crimes against women reporting 484 cases followed by Malappuram (442) and Thiruvananthapuram Rural (359). Social activists fear that the crimes, which go unreported, may be much more than the available statistics. In all, 357 cases related to rape were registered till April this year. Another 1,200 women were molested. According to the official statistics, 62 women were abducted and five became victims of dowry harassment. As many as 1,738 domestic harassment cases have also been reported in the initial four months of 2011. Kasaragod district recorded maximum number of rape cases — 81. Number of rape cases in other police districts are Thiruvananthapuram City (15); Thiruvananthapuram Rural (32); Pathanamthitta (9); Kollam City (20); Kollam Rural (4); Alappuzha (17); Idukki (16); Kottayam (13); Ernakulam City (6); Ernakulam Rural (16); Thrissur (25); Palakkad (34); Malappuram (28); Kozhikode City (2); Kozhikode Rural (21); Wayanad (13) and Kannur (5). Largest number of molestation cases was reported from Thiruvananthapuram rural - 176 till April. Kollam city stood second with 133 molestation cases and Thrissur in third position with 117 cases. In all, 10 women were abducted from Kollam city. Seven women were abducted from Kottayam and five from Thrissur. Kozhikode seems to have maximum number of eve-teasers as 52 cases were registered in the city. Thrissur stood second with 32 cases and Kottayam in third position with 31 cases. In all, 227 cases of domestic violence were reported from Malappuram, 195 from Thrissur and 163 from Kollam City.
