It will be taken out from Coimbatore to Erode on July 2 Various organisations to take part ERODE: Members of Tamil Nadu Farmers Associations Federation and Green Protection Committee will take out a bicycle rally from Coimbatore to Erode on July 2 to create awareness among people on the importance of protecting Mother Nature. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the federation held here on Wednesday. Of late, pollution levels in the Kongu region have increased several folds owing to indiscriminate dumping of untreated effluents and industrial waste into water sources, including Noyyal River. Industries, particularly textile processing units, paper mills and tannery units continue to discharge thousands of gallons of untreated effluents into the water sources, poisoning the soil extensively. Members of both the organisations will also make farmers aware of the harm of using chemical fertilizers. Extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides poisoned the land and food products, besides causing irreversible damages to the environment. They will also spread awareness on the negative aspects of genetically engineered seeds and urge the government to ban such seeds. The federation will exhort the farmers to ensure food security of the country and fight against the forces causing damage to the environment and farming. Members of various organisations, including Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, Lower Bhavani Farmers Association, Tamizhaga Uzhavar Iyakkam, Kongu Ilaignar Peravai, Tamil Nadu Green Movement and Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement will also participate in the rally, association President Thuran Nambi and co-ordinator S. Nallasamy said.
