CII in talks with Government to revive Bellandur lake
Staff Reporter
Exercise estimated to cost around Rs. 120 crore It will be taken up on a PPP model
BANGALORE: There could be some hope for the much-polluted Bellandur lake as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is in talks with government agencies to rejuvenate the water body.
According to the CII Karnataka State Council Chairperson S. Chandrasekhar, the exercise, estimated to cost around Rs. 120 crore, is likely to be taken up on a public-private partnership (PPP) model and corporates around the lake would be roped in.
The cost, he said, had been worked out by a consultant commissioned to suggest means to rejuvenate the lake.
While one round of discussions have been held with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and Centre for Sustainable Development, he said that next meeting was likely to be held next month. “Some corporates have shown interest in the rejuvenation talks.”
Regulatory authority
Mr. Chandrasekhar said the CII had conveyed to the Government the need for a water regulatory authority to audit water consumption in Bangalore. Currently, he said, an estimated 40 per cent of the water supplied to the city by the water board (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) was being wasted through leakages. “A water audit will help ascertain this,” he added.
