Judgment on retirement age of lecturers to be challenged

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The State Government has decided to challenge the Karnataka High Court's decision to hike the age of retirement of college lecturers to 65 as per the UGC Regulations, 2010.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Minister for Higher Education V.S. Acharya said that the age of retirement for all government servants in the State would remain at 60. The Government was against enhancing the age of retirement of its employees from 60. “Our view is clear and all our government employees' retirement age is 60,” he said.

The State government has fixed age of retirement of college teachers at 60. The retirement age of teachers of working in universities is fixed at 62. In fact, the Yeddyurappa government hiked the retirement age of government employees from 58 to 60 in 2009, he said.

The Minister said the Government would challenge the court's verdict by filing a writ petition in the court. A Gulbarga bench of the Karnataka High Court had recently given the verdict fixing the age of retirement of college lecturers at 60, Dr. Acharya said.

On Wednesday, while quashing the government's Order fixing retirement age between 60 and 62, the High Court said that “the denial of the enhancement of the age of superannuation to teachers, working in government and aided, affiliated colleges, drawing UGC scale of pay, are repugnant to the UGC Act and the Regulations and hence is void.”
