CIFA's plea to Manmohan

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Consortium of Indian Farmers Associations (CIFA) has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to immediately implement the recommendations of the National Commission on Farmers, headed by M.S. Swaminathan. In a representation to Dr. Singh, CIFA's secretary-general P. Chengal Reddy sought his intervention saying that the farmers in the country were on the verge of collapse due to anti-farmer policies of the UPA Government. In Andhra Pradesh, farmers in 0.2 million acres have declared a crop holiday. Due to cumulative increase in cost of inputs and labour, the cost of paddy cultivation per acre went up to Rs.7,500-Rs.8,000.
