GULBARGA: After remaining elusive for 15 days, general secretary of the State unit of the BJP Amarnath Patil facing non-bailable charges under different sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 for allegedly assaulting Shrimant Pattedar, personal assistant to Secretary of the Hyderabad Karnataka Area Development Board (HKADB) Shalini Rajneesh Goel, surrendered to the police here on Thursday.

Mr. Amarnath Patil, also the chairman of the HKADB, who went underground immediately after the police registered cases on June 9, dramatically surfaced here in the afternoon and surrendered before Deputy Superintendent of Police A.D. Basannavar around 3 p.m. Mr. Basannavar and Deputy Superintendent of Police C.K. Baba are jointly investigating the case.

Special Court Judge Basavaraj Belawadgi remanded Amarnath Patil to judicial custody till July 7 and directed the jail authorities to subject the accused to medical check-up after advocate R.K. Hiremath representing the accused told the court that the accused was “feeling uneasy and having pain in the heart”. Amarnath Patil also told the judge that he was “having pain in the heart”.

The judge posted the hearing of the application filed by Mr. Hiremath for regular bail of Amarnath Patil for June 30 and asked the prosecution to file objections to the bail application, if any, the same day.

Amarnath Patil was whisked away in a police jeep to the Central Jail from the court complex. Earlier, the police, after completing procedures at the police station, took the accused in a police jeep to the special court inside the District Court complex for production before the special judge.

A large number of BJP workers and leaders were present in the police station and on the court premises. Before he was produced before Judge Basavaraj Belawadgi at the Special Court dealing with cases filed under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, Amarnath Patil in a brief interaction with presspersons said that he was innocent and that he was confident of proving his innocence in a court of law.

Asked why he remained underground for 15 days before surrendering to the police, Amarnath Patil said that he had not gone underground and had surrendered to the police after his anticipatory bail application was rejected.

Incidentally, Mr. Basavaraj Belawadgi had on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail application file by the accused.
