Contrasting wins for East Bengal and JCT

KOLKATA: East Bengal and JCT Mills Academy continued their successful run with contrasting wins in their respective second round outings of the final stage of the under-19 league for the I-League teams here on Thursday.

Playing at home, East Bengal faced a stiff challenge from Churchill Brothers but managed to win by the odd goal in seven. Churchill Brothers took the lead as early as the second minute through Edwin Lucas. East Bengal equalised in the fifth minute through midfielder Nabin Hela. The teams were locked 1-1 at the half-time.

East Bengal enhanced the lead with Pankaj Moula and Tanmoy Kundu making it 3-1 by the 53rd minute. Churchill came back strongly to make it 3-3 by the 79th minute with Marcus Fernandes and Franky Olivera finding the target in quick succession.

Abinash Ruidas fired the winner for East Bengal off a solo effort in the 84th minute ensuring the home side tallied full six points after two matches.

JCT Academy boys continued to impress with their robust football and drubbed Mumbai FC 4-1 at the Mohammedan Sporting ground. JCT ran up a 3-0 lead at the halftime riding on a hat-trick from Seiminlen Doungel (25, 28 and 37th minutes). Ashutosh Mehta pulled one back for the Mumbai side in the 52nd minute before the JCT striker Guriqbal Singh found the net in the 61st minute (4-1) to keep JCT in the title hunt with full six points in its kitty. — Principal Correspondent
