KOLLAM: Activists of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) marched to the District Hospital and gheraoed hospital superintendent Susan Mathew for over three hours demanding restoration of the scanning centre attached to the hospital. The demonstration was withdrawn with its restoration. The AIYF activists alleged that steps were deliberately not taken to restore the centre due to a nexus between the medical staff of the hospital and private scanning centres. The attitude is both to help the private scanning centres and also earn commissions, they alleged. Dr. Susan said some days ago a fuse of the scanning machine had blown off. It is the District Panchayat's duty to restore it and the duty of the KSEB to install it. Though the District Panchayat had purchased the fuse three days ago, the KSEB staff did not turn up to install it in spite of being informed. Even as the gherao was in progress, Dr. Susan called up the KSEB authorities and informed them about the situation. The KSEB staff arrived and installed the fuse following which operations of the scanning centre resumed. The demonstration was inaugurated by CPI leader Sam K. Daniel and led by AIYF leaders G. Udayakumar and R. Sajilal.
