‘Action against persons with large landholdings in hills'

ERODE: The administration will identify persons having large landholdings in the hilly areas in Erode district and initiate action against them under the Land Ceiling Act, District Revenue Officer Kumaravel Pandian has said.

Participating at the farmers' grievances redress meeting held here on Friday, he said that the officials would be asked to prepare a list of persons, particularly those who had moved from the plains to the hills, having large landholdings.

The administration would initiate appropriate action against them, if they were found holding lands exceeding the ceiling limits under the Act. The administration would also identify encroachments on the government and poromboke lands in the hills and make efforts to remove them, Mr. Kumaravel Pandian said.

He was responding to queries from the farmers on the issue. The farmers wanted the administration to pay more attention on the violation of the Land Ceiling Act in the district particularly in the hilly areas. They also appealed to the administration to take steps to release water from Bhavanisagar Dam for irrigation in the Lower Bhavani Project ayacut areas on August 1, ahead of the customary date of opening of the reservoir on August 15.

The farmers also raised a number of issues including the increasing levels of pollution in the water sources during the meeting.

Mr. Kumaravel Pandian assured them that appropriate steps would be initiated to redress the grievances of the farming community.
