The patient had suffered stroke on two earlier occasions Team of doctors perform ‘right carotid artery stenting' Manipal: A 94-year-old person underwent carotid angioplasty treatment at the Kasturba Hospital here. A press release issued by the hospital stated that the patient, the man suffered from a stroke two years ago. He was on anti-platelet aggregators. He had one more stroke of the same nature three months ago. During the examination by Raviraj Acharya, a block in the artery which supplies blood to the brain called the carotid artery was detected. A stroke can happen when a blood vessel in any part of the brain is blocked. The blood through the narrowed carotid artery may slow so much that a clot is formed. The only solution was right carotid artery stenting. Consultant Cardiologists Ranjan Shetty and Tom Devasia, with the help of Prasad from the Department of Anaesthesiology, successfully performed the “right carotid artery stenting” without any complication. The patient has completely recovered. The stenting procedure opens the artery and would prevent further narrowing. The cardiology unit of Dr. Shetty has performed considerable number of carotid angioplasty providing relief to patients. “Even a single attack of the same would have had the patient either dead or severely paralysed for the rest of his life,” said Dr. Shetty, consultant cardiologist. Usually at his age such major procedures are not performed considering the age factor. But in this case, there was no other medical treatment available and hence angioplasty was thought of. The patient and relatives were very optimistic and ready for the interventional treatment. Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital R.R. Pulgaonkar was all praise for the patient and family and relatives for taking such a major decision, the release added.
