Film producer taken into custody

HYDERABAD: A big-time Telugu film producer, Singanamala Ramesh Babu, was taken into custody by the Andhra Pradesh police in Chennai on Friday in connection with three fraud and cheating cases, in which he is among the accused.

The CID of Police is investigating the three cases, including one relating to a Rs.14.69-crore fraud committed by him along with Bhanu Kiran -- prime accused in the murder case of Maddelacheruvu Suri -- who is still at large.

Ramesh Babu produced, among others, two films, ‘Khaleja' starring Mahesh Babu and ‘Komaram Puli' featuring Pawan Kalyan in the lead role.

S.V. Ramana Murthy, additional DGP, CID, said in a press release here on Friday that based on a complaint by one B. Vaijayanthi Reddy, wife of Sadanand of Hyderabad, a criminal case under section 406 IPC (criminal breach of trust), 420 IPC (cheating), and 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) was registered in January this year.

Ramesh Babu and his wife Vidyadhari obtained a loan of Rs.18.12 crore from Ms. Vaijayanthi Reddy and her husband for film production. They claimed to own property measuring 9 acres and 53 cents, located in Poonjeri village, Mahabalipuram Road, near Chennai.

The couple subsequently repaid Rs.3.42 crore through registration of three flats in the city.
