UP In arms: Telugu Desam leaders and workers demonstrating at Jagadamba junction in Visakhpatnam on Friday on farmers problems.

VIZIANAGARAM: As per the schedule announced by the State TDP committee, the party leaders and cadres staged dharnas and organised rasta rokos in all Assembly constituencies in the district against the government's indifference toward the cause of farmers.

I.V.P. Raju, party district general secretary, who led the protesters here, said farmers were put to hardship due to non-supply of seed in time.

The government had made it clear that it would not be able to supply Sona Masuri variety seed.

But the same was available in black market at a price ranging from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1000.

Likewise, it failed to supply Bt. cotton and groundnut seeds.

He said farmers were at a loss as they had not been getting remunerative price for the paddy raised in kharif last and also for samba masuri and RGL varieties for the last two years. Further, he said bills of sugarcane growers were pending for the last one year. Mr. Raju alleged that the Congress workers alone were getting the input subsidy released for the crop damaged due to unseasonal rain in December last year.

However, in a release, Joint Director (Agriculture) J. Ravi Kumar said 38,748 quintals of seeds procured through A.P. Seeds were kept in mandal agriculture offices besides 27,200 quintals ready with private dealers as on Wednesday.

Of the total 65,948 quintals of seed, 22,258 quintals were already sold.

He said that the agriculture officials had been regularly monitoring supply of seed at all seed selling outlets and steps had been taken for proper distribution.

He asked the farmers to obtain receipt and sign on it for the seed bought from the outlets and dealers.
