He was sent to jail as his bail plea was rejected BERHAMPUR: An alleged hard core Maoist of Ganjam, Sudarsan Mandal was arrested by the police. He was forwarded to court at Sorada in Ganjam district on Friday and was sent to jail as his bail plea was rejected. According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, R.K.Sharma, Mandal has past criminal record and had got attached to Maoist activity since 2008. He was part of the Maoist group that is led by Sabyasachi Panda. He worked with the Ghumusara division of outlawed CPI (Maoist) organisation. Mr. Sharma said during interrogation Mandal, who hails from Patachanchara village under Badagada police station limits in Ganjam district, has confessed of his involvement in Maoist activities in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts. He was involved in the murder of Dilip Swain, former sarpanch of Balarampur under Badagada police station limits in June last year. As per his confession, cause of this murder was a village dispute. Mandal had used his Maoist connections to use militias of the Maoist organisation to kill Swain. According to the police sources Mandal had nexus with the timber mafia of Gangapur area and was also involved in extortion and bombing and other criminal activities. He was also involved in extortion from passenger buses and theft of motorcycles . Mr. Sharma said confession of Mandal hints that criminals are now attracted towards Maoist organisations to enhance their criminal activity.
