THRISSUR: A vigilance official of the Kerala Forest Department on Friday conducted a surprise inspection at Punnathur anakkotta of the Guruvayur Devaswom. Inspection was conducted in the wake of complaints that unhygienic conditions at anakkota were causing diseases in the elephants. Talking to the media, DFO (Vigilance) S. Unnikrishnan noted that five elephants in the anakkotta were suffering from foot disease. He asked the authorities to clean the premises immediately. A bio-compost unit to treat the waste generated at the anakkota would be a lasting solution, he suggested. He would submit a detailed report to the chief conservator.
