New train services from July 1

COIMBATORE: Southern Railway – Salem Division has announced that two new trains will be introduced as announced in the Union Railway Budget in February besides making the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam special train service into a permanent one with effect from July 1.

The first train to be introduced on July 1 would be the Coimbatore – Thoothukudi daily link express. From Coimbatore to Vanchimaniyachi, the link express with six coaches will be attached to the Coimbatore – Nagercoil overnight express train on either direction and from Vanchimaniyachi to Thoothukudi will be run as a link express on either direction.

The Thoothukudi link express will have six coaches in addition to the 16 coaches of the Coimbatore – Nagercoil Express, thus, taking the coach composition to a total of 22 coaches. The link express will be run with the number 16612/16611.

Similarly, the existing Coimbatore – Mettupalayam Passenger (special) 56146/47 and 56148/49 and 56150/51 (six days a week) has been regularised and made a permanent train service with effect from July 1.

In addition, the Ernakulam – Bangalore – Ernakulam Express (weekly service) with the numbers 22607/08 will be introduced from Ernakulam on July 24 and from Bangalore on July 25.

Sources in the Southern Railway pointed out that the special train is also likely to be run via Irugur – Podanur – Irugur skipping Coimbatore Junction. However, a final decision on the routing of the train was awaited, sources said.
