Forum calls for special train exhibiting Subramaniya Bharathiyar's works

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Subramaniya Bharathiyar Thinker's Forum, a private body created by a group of followers of the Tamil poet, based here has urged the Committee on Heritage and Culture, Ministry of Railways, to operate a Special exhibition train across the country to commemorate the 128 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary of the poet. Forum's secretary R. Lakshminarayanan has also asked the Ministry to release a handbook containing the biography of the poet as it was done in the case of Rabindranath Tagore's 150 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary early this year. He said that the Committee had not replied to a representation made by the forum in this regard as early as October 13, 2010. In the representation, the forum had said that Bharathiar worked for the cause of freedom of the country at the cost of his family, health and wealth. He wrote many poems kindling the spirit of freedom among the Tamils. His contribution to eradication of untouchability and casteism was phenomenal.

Born at Ettayapuram in Tuticorin district on December 11, 1882, he began to write poems at the age of 11 and got the title Bharathi meaning Saraswathi. He was a great national poet, journalist, cartoonist and columnist. He began his career as a journalist at the age of 22 as a sub-editor of Swadesi Mitran, a Tamil newspaper published from Chennai.

“His patriotic poems had a permanent place in the struggle for independence. Even though all his poems were fit and meritorious, Bharathi could not get the Nobel prize as his works were not sent to the selection committee during his life time. Therefore, I humbly request you to consider our request to launch five air-conditioned coaches bearing his Tamil poems and their translations,” the representation read.
