Tanker lorry owners go on strike in Tuticorin
Staff Reporter
Tuticorin: The owners of drinking water tanker lorries and borewells called for an indefinite strike since Thursday night. The seizure of a couple of lorries and arrest of a few drivers on charges of drawing ground level water in Ottapidaram block recently triggered the strike. The drivers expressed solidarity in protest against the enforcement of ban on such activities.
The owners of all 300 vehicles and proprietors of borewells in unison laid siege to the Collectorate here on Friday demanding for the intervention of district administration to sort out this issue. All vehicles were stationed on the by-pass road near the Collectorate. “While such practices of drawing water at ground level for supply to the households have been prevalent here for more than 30 years, why should the authorities suddenly indulge in this coercive approach?”, the owners asked.
Apart from affecting the livelihoods of vehicle owners, the public would also suffer without drinking water. Not only the public but factories, industries and other small and medium scale trade units would also suffer without water. If the drinking water lorry owners struck work continuously, students in schools, patients in hospitals, workers in construction industry, power plant projects, ice plants, fish processing units and people in all walks of life would experience difficulties due to water scarcity.
It was only with these tanker lorries, people were getting drinking water at certain localities where there was no supply of corporation water, P. Duraisingh, Secretary, Drinking Water Tanker Lorry Owners' Association, said
