Girl stabbed to death on way to school

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: A 13-year-old girl was stabbed to death on her way to school by a young man at Chanchol in Malda district on Friday after she refused to acknowledge his overtures.

The young man was later lynched by agitated villagers.

According to the police, the Class VII student was accosted by Mukimuddin, 23, on her way to school and stabbed several times when she refused his proposal.

“Both lived in the same neighbourhood and the young man had proposed to the girl several times in the past without success. When the girl refused to listen to him, he tried to drag her into the adjoining field. Mukimuddin stabbed the girl after she started screaming. She died on the spot,” Malda Superintendent of Police Bhuban Chandra Mondal said.

He said that villagers lynched the man at the same spot.

“Two cases have been registered by the police – one for killing the girl and the other for lynching Mukimuddin. Investigations are underway to identify those villagers who beat up the youth,” he added.
