Chandigarh: The Food Corporation of India has asked the Centre to extend the last date for rice delivery from Punjab into the Central pool to September 15 as the State is yet to deliver 28 lakh tonnes for the crop year 2010-11. As of now, June 30 is the last date for rice procurement. “We have recommended to the Centre that the last date for delivering rice in central pool by Punjab be extended from June 30 to September 15. The Punjab Government had sought extension till September 30,” a senior FCI official told PTI on Friday. Punjab, which accounts for about 30 per cent in the Central pool, is yet to deliver 28 lakh tonnes of Custom Milling Rice of the earmarked 86.43 lakh tonnes for the crop year 2010-11. Besides, the agrarian State is yet to contribute 2.30 lakh tonnes of rice for the year 2009-10. State rice millers that have so far contributed 58.43 lakh tonnes of CMR so far to the Central pool, blamed lacking storage facilities in the State for having to seek the extension in supplying the needed quantity. “Rice millers are ready to supply rice in time provided the State has sufficient space for storing rice crop. The State is facing acute shortage of space for storing food grain crop, which compels the millers to demand extension in last date,” Punjab State Rice Millers Association vice-president Anil Sood said. - PTI
