SMS to find out status of property registration

Special Correspondent

The facility will reduce dependence on government officials

Buyer need not file separate application to initiate the process

Tumkur: Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy on Friday unveiled an innovative process by which buyers of agricultural property in rural areas can track the status of the process by which the property rights are transferred to them through an SMS facility.

Explaining the features of the facility, Mr. Reddy said, “Currently buyers go through a harrowing time because there are about 10 different stages in the process of transfer of ownership rights after the property is registered at the office of the sub-registrar concerned . They now have no way of knowing where their transaction is pending.”

The integration of the award-winning Bhoomi digital land records registry with Kaveri, the online registration process, will enable tracking of the status of an application for the changes of the new ownership rights to be incorporated in the land records following the registration, he explained. “The SMS facility, which will be available in English and Kannada, arises from this integration,” he said.

“Almost every farming household possesses a mobile phone now, and the facility will make life easier for rural folk,” Mr. Reddy said.

Mr. Reddy said farmers currently have to make several trips to the taluk offices to find out about the status of their transaction. “The new facility will also reduce their dependence on government officials,” he said.

Mr. Reddy, who witnessed a real time demonstration of the automation process at the sub-registrar's office in Tumkur, said the government is planning to upgrade the software and hardware elements in the process.

Admitting that his department faced a shortage of surveyors. Mr. Reddy said the government has given approval for the recruitment of 2,000 surveyors through the Karnataka Public Service Commission. “We plan to speed up the process of scanning and microfilming land records so that they can have a life of at least 100 years,” he remarked.

Officials in the Revenue Department said the process is automated in such a manner that the buyer does not even have to file a separate application to initiate the process.
