Thin isn't in:Corporation officials inspecting the less-than-40-micron plastic bags they seized in the city on Friday. COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Corporation officials on Friday seized 700 kg plastic bags that were less than 40 microns. A team of officials led by Food Inspectors R. Gunasekaran and R. Radhakrishnan seized the bags near Edayar Street in the morning when they were being taken to a shop. The officials were supervising conservancy operations at the spot. They said that their enquiry with the man carrying the bag revealed that he was taking the bag on behalf of a shopkeeper from his warehouse on Edayar Street to the shop on Thomas Street. The seized bags were worth about Rs. 1.5 lakh, they said. The bags were taken to the Corporation godown on Raja Street. They would be used to lay a road in the city. The Corporation officials had been seizing bags less than 40 microns in city after the Union Government came up with a notification in that regard. In the recent past, they had conducted intensive raids and seized over 5,000 kg bags. As per rule, only bags above 40 microns are to be used and that too, with the name and details of the manufacturer.
