Need for awareness on blood donation stressed

Good gift: Coimbatore District Collector M. Karunakaran donates blood at the Collectorate on Friday as part of a campaign to mark the World Blood Donor's Day.

COIMBATORE: The need for creating adequate awareness on blood donation to save precious lives was stressed by District Collector M. Karunakaran on Friday.

He was talking to reporters on the sidelines of the visit of the Rs. 1.23-crore mobile blood bank of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society to Coimbatore on Friday.

Expressing happiness over getting an opportunity to stress the importance of blood donation, he took the lead by being the first person to donate one unit of 350 ml blood.

The functioning of blood banks have been streamlined to ensure timely supply of blood to lives in danger, he said.

Now, there is a need to generate awareness among the people and encourage them to donate blood to save lives. People in the age group of 18 to 65 could donate blood, the process of which would take only 20 minutes.

After donating blood, they could soon perform their daily routine work.

The district collector also expressed happiness at a large number of college students coming forward to donate blood.
