COIMBATORE: With 866 students getting admitted in 13 courses and another few hundreds put on waitlist, the first phase of counselling at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University came to an end on Saturday. The total number of seats is 1,365. The counselling that began on June 20 saw 1,837 candidates choose courses under the single window system. Coimbatore boy G. Arvindh Ram with 198.75 cut-off was the first to get provisional admission in the B. Tech. (Bioinformatics) course. According to A. Rajarajan, Dean (Agriculture), this year too the most favoured was the flagship B.Sc. Agriculture course. While there are 392 takers for the course, there are 383 on the waitlist. In the technical courses, the most favoured was biotechnology, followed by food processing engineering, and then energy and environmental engineering. The waitlist for these courses were also quite high. “The response, from the number of applications received (10,250) to the waitlist today, again goes to prove that agriculture education is one of the most favoured on a par with engineering and medicine,” he told The Hindu. Since the waitlist number was high, the second phase of counselling would be held only for candidates belonging to specific communities. Also, Mr. Rajarajan believed that except for a few who would go in for engineering, most would confirm their admission by July 4, the deadline set by the university. Nearly 250 candidates had already confirmed their admission by submitting the original documents and paying the fee, he added. The counselling for vocational category and for those who had applied under special quota would be held on July 8. The second phase of counselling was scheduled to be held on July 11.
