Differently abled person gets tricycle within 3 hours of giving petition

Rural Industries Minister M.C.Sampath giving away tricycle to a differently abled person in Cuddalore on Saturday.

CUDDALORE: A differently abled person, S.Ramachandran (29) of Periya Kumatti near here, who was discharged from the government hospital at about 1 p.m. on Saturday, was given a new tricycle within three hours of handing over a petition to the Differently abled Persons' Welfare Department here.

Rural Industries Minister M.C.Sampath gave away the tricycle to him at an official function held here on Saturday. Mr. Ramachandran was given a tricycle two years ago, but, he was hit by a speeding motorcycle on June 21.

He suffered injuries in the hands, legs and head. The tricycle was damaged beyond repairs. He was admitted to the government hospital here and discharged on Saturday.

On learning that the Minister had come to distribute aid to differently abled persons, Mr. Ramachandran sent an application to T. Srinivasan, Welfare Officer for Differently abled Persons.

His application was immediately processed and a new tricycle was brought to be given at a function that started at 4 p.m.

Collector V. Amuthavalli said that for each of the nine Assembly constituencies, a sum of Rs. 5 lakh had been earmarked from the MLA Local Constituency Development Funds to procure aid for the differently abled. From the total amount of Rs. 45 lakh thus allocated, various aid such as tricycles, wheel-chairs, foldable wheel-chairs, calipers, artificial lamps, Braille watches, etc., would be given away to 1,166 beneficiaries at a cost of over Rs. 29.23 lakh, she said.

As many as 160 beneficiaries in Cuddalore constituency alone would get assistance to the tune of Rs. 3.17 lakh.

Mr Srinivasan said that the expenditure on the tricycle for Mr. Ramachandran was met from the general funds allocated to the department.
