Forum takes up cause of rivers, lake

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Pampa Parirakshana Samiti has called upon the government to formulate an ‘integrated water source development plan' for conservation of Vembanad Lake and the rivers Pampa, Manimala, Achencoil and Meenachil, that constitute the lifeline of Central Travancore and Kuttanad.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, PPS general secretary N.K. Sukumaran Nair said the four rivers that empty out into Vembanad Lake were the main water source of Kuttanad.

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh had agreed to include Vembanad Lake in the National Wetland Conservation Plan which would be implemented with 100 per cent Central assistance, he said.

Mr. Nair alleged that successive governments had failed in properly utilising Central funds for river conservation and for rejuvenation of the Kuttanad water system. The Rs.320-crore Pampa Action Plan, sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to reduce pollution in the river from Sabarimala to Thakazhy, under the National River Conservation Plan, had lapsed owing to the apathetic attitude of the State government, he alleged.

The PPS leader called upon the government to revive the Pampa Action Plan which could bring about development of Central Travancore.
