No hike in bus fares

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State government will not increase bus fares in spite of the hike in the price of diesel, Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji on Saturday said.

The present fares had been fixed when the retail price of diesel was around Rs. 18 per litre. Now, the fuel price had gone up to Rs. 43.8 per litre.

During 2010-2011, the State-run transport corporations suffered loss of Rs. 1,005 crore, he pointed out.

An official said the hike would place an additional burden of Rs.16 crore to Rs. 17 crore every month on the transport corporations. In a year, the additional expenditure would be around Rs. 200 crore.
