Hassan: The Deputy Conservator of Forests of Hassan division Ambadi Madhava has refuted allegations by M.K. Sheshe Gowda, president of the OBC cell of the District Congress Committee, about misappropriation of funds in tackling elephant menace in the division. In a press release, Mr. Madhava said that between 2005 and 2010, Rs. 4.31 crore was spent to drive away elephants that had strayed into human habitats besides providing compensation to the family of the victims and also to farmers who suffered crop loss. Firecrackers Mr. Gowda had alleged that the Forest Department spent Rs. 25 crore between 2005 and 2010 for this purpose. The Deputy Conservator of Forests said the Forest Department spent Rs. 5.08 lakh on firecrackers to drive away elephants. Mr. Gowda had alleged that Rs. 1.62 crore had been spent only on firecrackers. Mr. Madhava said Rs. 34.86 lakh was spent to pay daily wage employees deployed to drive away elephants. In five years, 13,309 people were killed in elephant attacks, he added.
