Complaint on special classes goes to SHRC

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has forwarded a complaint pertaining to conduct of special classes during summer vacation to the State Human Rights Commission for early disposal.

After The Hindu published a report on April 28 on the SSLC and Plus Two students being compelled by some of the schools in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai to attend special classes during the summer vacation, S. Jafar Ali, advocate and general secretary, Tamil Nadu People's Consumer Federation, forwarded a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission with a copy of the news item.

On receiving the petition from Mr. Ali on May 7, it was placed before the Commission's perusal on June 3. Since issues relating to Department of Education come under the State's jurisdiction, it was transferred to the State Human Rights Commission for appropriate action.

In a communication to the Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission, the Assistant Registrar (Law) of the NHRC has said that the grievance raised in these complaints relate to matters which are subject to the State and hence the complaints are transferred to the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission under Section 13 (6) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2006 for disposal in accordance with the provisions of the Act. “We expect that the verdict to be delivered by the SHRC in this regard would put an permanent end to the conduct of compulsory special classes, at least in next summer,” said Mr. Ali.
