Uma Bharati meets Sonia to garner support for Ganges campaign

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi received an unusual visitor at her residence here on Saturday afternoon when Uma Bharati, the saffron-clad former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister — who recently returned to her parent party, the BJP — called on her to seek her support for a campaign to Save the Ganges in which she has been involved.

Ms. Bharati looked pleased as she stepped out of 10 Janpath, saying Ms. Gandhi had given her an assurance that a Save the Ganges Board would be set up to monitor the situation and its members would be drawn from various fields. Ms. Bharati has been demanding that such a board be constituted with eminent environmentalists, scientists and religious persons as members.

The BJP officially stated there was no politics in the meeting at all. The meeting had been scheduled earlier and she had taken “permission” from the party leadership for meeting Ms. Gandhi.
