‘Be aware of social responsibility'

Accent on updating one's knowledge

SALEM: Media should adopt the mantle of social responsibility while dealing with sensitive issues, said Salem Periyar University Vice Chancellor K. Muthuchelian.

Inaugurating a workshop on ‘New Trends in Journalism' organised by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Salem Periyar University and Salem District Press Club here on Friday, the Vice Chancellor said that any report before being filed should be verified thoroughly.

Impact

The media could make an impact on the society despite market compulsions and hence its responsibility was all the more important.

He further said that innovative ideas and positive exposures had benefited the society immensely.

“You should be society and knowledge-friendly and hence need constant updating for which such workshops are necessary,” he pointed out.

Writings on Science and Technology and Education had to be improved, he said.

Head of Department of Journalism V. Natarajan stressed on constant updating for capacity building for journalists.

Use of Tamil

Maa Tamizhparuthi, Assistant Professor, spoke on the use of Tamil in Internet and other applications. S. Nadakumar and R. Subramani also spoke.

Club President V. Kathiravan welcomed. Secretary S. Thangaraja presided while G. Rajasekaran proposed a vote of thanks.

Club's Office bearers Siva Subramanian and Ramasamy also spoke.

Photojournalist A. M. Sudhakar was felicitated for his performances in various photo competitions.

A blog was also inaugurated on the occasion.
