COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is looking forward to working with private firms in effectively reaching out to farmers, Vice-Chancellor of the university P. Murugesa Boopathi said here recently. Inaugurating a training programme on “Rice Crop Knowledge” organised at the university in association with Mahindra Samridhi, the Vice-Chancellor said it needed assistance in multiplying seeds for distribution to farmers, for organising village meetings, farm trials, field demonstrations, and other such extension activities. “TNAU has released 743 crop varieties / hybrids, 149 farm implements and more than a thousand technologies. But only less than 30 per cent of those have reached the farmers. Mahindra Samridhi could partner with the university to conduct farmers' meet at all 385 blocks in the State to reach farmers effectively,” Mr. Boopathi said. He also stressed the importance of farm mechanisation in agriculture that was seen as an alternative to combat the labour shortage and improve farm efficiency. Pointing out the advantages of some of the implements, the Vice-Chancellor said government was providing subsidy to farmers in purchase of some of these. Srinivas Vedule, Deputy General Manager, Mahindra Samridhi, Mumbai, said the personnel of the company were looking beyond technical skills to serving the farming community. He made a mention of some of the programmes that the company had designed to transform the lives of farmers through its joint initiatives with State agricultural universities.
