SP conducts probe into death of newborns
R. Vimal Kumar
Tirupur: The recovery of bodies of two newborns from different parts of the city within a few hours created a flutter on Saturday.
While the body of a male child wrapped in a polythene cover was found in a well at Parapalayam late on Friday night, the body of another male baby was recovered from near a garbage bin at Chandrapuram.
The Superintendent of Police, V. Balakrishnan, who conducted the preliminary investigation, told The Hindu that one of the babies had a peculiar tag tied to his hand, “which helped us confirm that the birth was at a primary health centre (PHC).”
“Only a detailed investigation can help us pinpoint the exact PHC in which the birth took place and ascertain whether it was a stillbirth or some foul play was involved,” police officials added.
Following the incidents, Mr. Balakrishnan directed the government hospitals and primary health centres to properly maintain birth registers. “It has been found that addresses and other details have been entered vaguely in registers,” Mr. Balakrishnan said after inspecting government hospitals.
The Tirupur South police have registered a case with regard to the body found at Parapalayam, while the Tirupur Rural police are investigating the other case.
