MLA detained at police station
Special Correspondent
SALEM: Mettur MLA S.R. Parthiban was detained at Omalur police station near here for nearly two hours on charges of using abusive language against a sub-inspector and other policemen on duty on Friday night. He was later permitted to leave the station after tendering an apology.
Highly placed police sources told The Hindu that the MLA had barged into the station with his men and wanted to know whether the police initiated any action on the complaint filed by one of the party cadres in connection with a civil dispute.
Before the police could inform him that a complaint had been registered, the MLA reportedly started using ‘harsh' language against the Special Sub-Inspector Natarajan and constables on duty. Objecting strongly to it, the police informed the senior officials and asked the MLA to remain in station itself for further action.
Salem Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan rushed to the spot and held an inquiry in which the MLA denied the allegations. However, he expressed his “regret for the happening.” “We have sorted out the issue amicably since the MLA had also expressed his regret,” the SP said.
