Collector V. Shobhana is in the picture. KARUR: Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji has urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite the completion of the Veerarakkiam-Sukkaliyur bypass section skirting Karur town so that heavy vehicles on the busy Karur-Tiruchi NH-67 could be diverted through that stretch. The move would benefit the residents of Veerarakkiam, Puliyur and Gandhigram in the district. He travelled the Uppidamangalam-Sukkaliyur stretch on the Karur bypass that is being developed as part of the Karur-Tiruchi NH-67 road development work. The bypass work had been pending due to various issues, including hindrance in land acquisition. Mr. Senthil Balaji urged NHAI project director M. Thangamani to speed up the works stating that following the completion heavy vehicles could be diverted to Sukkaliyur from Puliyur. Mr. Thangamani assured the Minister that he would do his best to improve the pace of works. Speaking to the media, Mr. Senthil Balaji observed that the total length of the Veerarakkiam-Sukkaliyur bypass stretch was 14.8 km of which already 8.3 km has been completed. Work on the balance distance was progressing and he wanted the NHAI to improve the pace of work and complete the section possibly in a month. Then the Minister inspected the low level causeway across a stream on the road connecting Velliyanai with Jagadabi and said that a project has been prepared to renovate the causeway at an estimated cost of Rs.94 lakh under the aegis of NABARD Rural Roads plan. If everything fell in order, the works might begin during the current year itself, the Minister said. Collector V. Shobhana, Highways Department and Revenue officials accompanied the Minister during the inspection tour.
