Doctor with a funny bone

Dr. Moiz is a medical nutritionist by profession and a writer by nature, writes J.S. Ifthekhar

Abid Moiz

Hyderabad: Ever tried to read a doctor's prescription? You would surely throw up hands in despair. Only a pharmacist can decipher it. The verdict is clear – doctors are by and large not good writers. But this one begs to differ. J.S. Ifthekhar tries to find out what makes Dr. Abid Moiz a compulsive read.

A medical nutritionist by profession but a writer by nature, he believes in spreading warmth everywhere. This doctor has a funny bone too. No wonder his writings tickle you no end. Dr. Moiz has written four books in all. While two deal with health, the other tell how laughter is the best medicine. His tryst with writing started from his student days. It was actually the Telangana stir during the 60's that brought out the writer in him.

“I used to spend lot of time in library reading books. And my first article was about a visit to library”, says the 56-year old Moiz who captures humorously the way people spend time in library and there was no looking back. He gave up his government job as civil assistant surgeon in 1987 and joined the Ministry of Health, Saudi Arabia. Here too, he kept writing a column for the Urdu Magazine published from Jeddah and contributed articles back home in various journals. His first book “Wah Hyderabad”, a collection of short stories, mirrors the socio-cultural life of Hyderabad in a funny way.

His second book “Sag Gasida” is all about dog bites and the way doctors try to glean information about the canine. Recently, Dr. Moiz has come out with books on diabetes and ‘Chiknai aur hamari sehath'. With charts and illustrations, they highlight the danger posed by these maladies. Such comprehensive books being few in Urdu, Dr. Moiz has become an instant hit.

Moreover, he takes care not to scare the reader. Rather gives hope that there is a way out if one disciplines his life. Those who consult Dr. Moiz come out relaxed. One can see the effect of humour therapy on them.
