TIRUCHI: Innovation is the key to success. K. Srikkanth, chairman, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, did meet with success while driving home this point during an interaction with students at the National College here on Friday.

“In the early 1980's my aggressive batting was criticised and I was termed as being ‘not technically sound.' But now, such batting is the order of the day,” he reminisced.

The former Indian captain said that to be an innovator it was vital to have a positive approach. “Dashing batsmen such as Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle are successful because of their positive attitude,” he said.

Urging the students to be passionate about their work, Mr. Srikkanth cited batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar as an example.

“Sachin has been playing international cricket for more than two decades now. His passion for the game keeps him going strong,” he said, advising the students to put their heart and soul in whatever they do.

Answering to a query posed by a student about the cricketing talent in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Srikkanth said that there was abundant talent available in the State.

“Three players (S. Badrinath, M. Vijay and Abhinav Mukund) from Tamil Nadu are part of the Indian squad in the ongoing Test series in West Indies, which is proof enough.” When asked about Duncan Fletcher, the new coach of the Indian cricket team, Mr. Srikkanth said: “He is a good coach and is doing a great job.”

Terming Indian cricket team skipper M.S. Dhoni as a leader who keeps things simple, Mr. Srikkanth observed that one of the good aspects of Dhoni's leadership is that he gives the players a freehand.

K. Anbarasu, principal, National College; M.A. Maluk Mohamed, principal, MAM College of Engineering; and D. Prasanna Balaji, Director of Physical Education, National College, also took part in the event..
