He wanted to write exam at journalism department instead of the allotted place The accused E. Dattatreya argued with the principal before kicking him HYDERABAD: In an unsavoury incident, the principal of the University College of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Sankar Narayana was assaulted by an unruly student following an argument over taking an examination. Taken aback at the incident, university authorities on Saturday constituted a committee to inquire into the attack on Friday by a postgraduate student who was arrested later. The committee would decide the action to be initiated against the assailant E. Dattatreya, a final year student of M.A. The attacker has already been remanded in judicial custody. The committee would also suggest measures to prevent such incidents in future. “It is yet to be decided if the student should be rusticated or proceed only with the criminal case,” the authorities said. The OU Registrar, V. Kishan Rao, in a press release, said the university was viewing the attack very seriously. The student from P.G. college in Secunderabad came to appear for the inter-disciplinary paper on journalism as part of the second year exams. While the seating arrangements were made in a hall on the top floor, the student argued that he would take the exam in the Journalism Department located in the cellar. He went to the principal, Shankar Narayana, a professor of Sanskrit, and argued with him saying that he would write the exam at the place of his choice. “As the principal turned down his demand, the student kicked him and tried to attack further even as others pacified him,” the Osmania University Inspector, P. Ashok, said. Students' anger The student eventually wrote the exam. Angered over the attack on the principal, scores of students assembled at the Arts College and prepared for retaliation. On learning this, the police rushed there and picked up Dattatreya. A case under Sec. 353 (preventing a public servant from discharging his duties) and 323 (assault) of IPC was registered against the student. Later, he was remanded in judicial custody.
