NRI divorces wife using forged signatures; three arrested

HYDERABAD: Police on Saturday arrested the parents and friend of a Non-Resident Indian for allegedly helping him obtain divorce from an Australian court by forging signatures of his wife living in Nacharam of Hyderabad.

K. Sambashiva Rao and K. Rama Devi, parents of K. Anil Kumar who is in Australia, and his friend, B. Ravi from S.R. Nagar, were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Efforts are on to bring Kumar to India and initiate criminal action against him as well, the Nacharam Sub-Inspector, G. Sudarshan, said.

Kumar of Krishna district married M. Bindu, daughter of Janardhan Rao, Assistant Executive Engineer in Panchayat Raj Department two years ago claiming that he was working as manager of a software company in Australia. He told them that he had completed M.B.A. and was earning Rs. 5 lakh a month.

After the marriage, he flew to Australia and did not come back to take his wife. “While this raised suspicions about him, Ms. Bindu stumbled upon his e-mail password,” the SI said. She learnt he was an Inter dropout and was working as truck driver in Australia prompting her to approach police in July 2010, leading to registration of a criminal case against him.

“The content in e-mails suggested that Kumar allegedly married an Australian woman to secure that country's citizenship ,” the SI told reporters. A few weeks ago, Ms. Bindu received documents from the Federal Court of Australia stating that she had been given divorce by Kumar as per the affidavit filed by her. She again approached the Nacharam police who found that Kumar had got her signatures forged and presented fabricated documents in her name in the court in Australia. The affidavit was sent from an address in S.R. Nagar, which turned out to be that of Kumar's friend B. Ravi.
